A cool book

I'm pleased with myself today because I upped my exercise a little bit. I've been trying to increase a little bit every time I work out, and I'm up to 5 miles on the recumbent bike, and I've been slowly increasing the weights and reps on the weight machine. Feelin' good, baby! In fact, the 5 miles was almost easy--I'm going to keep increasing on that to build up my endurance. It's also a great chance to catch up on reading...it seems like the miles just fly by.

After that, I shoveled a bit on the driveway. There is one spot that we bog down in when we're driving the Mustangs, and Ken asked me to try to make that a little better today. I didn't shovel so much as scrape off the soft layer on top...I was sort of a little walking snowplow. I hope it helps.

I was really excited to get a new book in the mail today. After reading my numerous entries lately about Googie signage, our friend Laurel (who runs Afton Station on Route 66) recommended American Signs: Form and Meaning on Route 66, by Lisa Mahar. I was missing that one from my collection, so I ordered it pronto! Laurel said she assisted with some of it, and the first thing I did was turn to the Acknowledgements section, and there she was! Very cool.

I just paged through it a little bit, and I'm itchin' to get at it. It looks fascinating, with discussions of shapes, materials, construction, etc. It seems to be in the same vein as Alan Hess' books on Googie and on Vegas signage, and it is right up my alley. Laurel, thank you so much for the recommendation. I can already tell that I'm going to enjoy it immensely!

Speaking of books, I have a question for you all. Does anyone else love blank journals? I was at Target yesterday and found one on sale and had to snap it up. I don't know what it is about them, but if I see one on sale, I'm all over it. I use them to make lists, or write notes to myself, and whenever we go on vacation and Shane takes care of Sheeba, I leave it out with a note to Shane and he writes a little day-to-day diary of what goes on when he comes over. (And yes, I've saved them all, Shane!) I just love those blank books--maybe it's the thought of all the things I can fill it with--and although I don't buy them indiscriminately, I can rarely resist one that's on sale.

Is it just me?

  1. I actually like the blank journals, too. I just haven't ever bought one because I didn't know what I'd do with it...LOL Now I do..... Thanks! Enjoy the book!

  2. I've been big on blank journals in the past few years. I'm constantly having to write things down, or Paul writes things down when I can't hear him. It's great for ideas for writing, or that elusive word you come across and want to remember to look up and use.

My favorite are moleskin journals. Moleskin is just a figure of speach for describing them (winks). I usually pick them up a Barnes and Noble. They are bound like the old world style journals, sewed together. I have a few Distress Leather bound journals, that are kept closed be leather bindings.

Lately I want to write everything and anything, whatever comes to mind. I'm never without one my moleskin J's far from me (you can get them in multiple sizes, lined, blank...). I tend to fill them quickly they usually only have 50-100 sheets in them. It's perfect makes it easier to keep one in my bag when I go out, in case I come across someone I can't hear. I guess by now you realized you hit on one of my fav. subjects. (Hugs)Indigo

  3. Hi Beth,
I guess it depends on the blank journal. If it obviously looks like a journal, I'm not so interested. But I do like notebooks!
    Best,

  5. I have a load of blank journals that remain blank. I prefer journaling using word doc, just typing away all my thoughts to be seen or deleted at a later time. Good question, Beth.

Good for you on the work out..will you be entering a marathon come spring?

  7. Holy crow I've been buying blank journals of every size, color and amount of lovely empty pages just waiting for my pen's touch, you too eh? lol it's addictive isn't it! Kudos for all you're doing with the exercise, I didn't get a recumbent, just a regular stationary bike and it's a clothes hanger now. You put me to shame so I'm tossing the t-shirts off and climbing on. Thanks for this post, Beth! :-)

  8. You're not alone! I don't buy a lot of journals but I have one going and one waiting at all times. When I was in Italy last year, I filled two and I'm so glad I did. I was there a month and would never have remembered everything we did if I hadn't written every day.

Re: The snow shoveling.....you are such a good wife. I am very impressed!!!

  10. I'm so glad you got Lisa's book and that you like it. I knew you would! Lovers of signs (i.e. you, me, and I hope many others) will appreciate that it's a bit more than just a lot of photos of neat signs.

I love blank journals, too. I have several. Most are partially used but never full of anything other than blankness. :-) Unfortunately, since I've been blogging my journaling has suffered greatly. I'm ashamed to say that it's just so much easier to press these keys than to hold a pen. Yes, I'm ashamed of myself.

  11. No, it isn't just you. I constantly buy journals and notebooks. In fact, I am trying to consolidate the stuff in them together, in an effort to be streamlined for my move.

That is way cool, your friend getting mentioned in the acknowledgements. Kind of like a 'brush with celebrity'!

  12. I don't use blank Journals but my son who had MS kept them faithfully we discovered after his early death. I opened the last one and most of that was a steady failure of his hands not being useful. He then switched to tape recorder, until his speech got to bad to understand. We found 3 full journals and none of us feel we have the right to intrude on his privacy so they and the tapes are packed away. Lucy

  13. Hi Beth, your new book looks very exciting. Would like to see some of the photos. I love blank journal and blank diaries. I've sort of a collection of them. I usually buy them because I like their cover and then I do not dare to write in them!!! Have a nice weekend. Ciao. Antonella

  14. I, too love those blank books...that is how I started my journals years and years ago. I have often given them out as gifts and people love them.

Lot's of memories are in those lovely blank books that you fill up with your personal thoughts. Nice to read 20 years from now....sort of like a Time Capsule.

  16. I've never bought a blank journal but you make is sound appealing. Well done on being a human snowplow, I hope it works for you too! I didn't bother to shovel or snowblow with the last snow, I let the sun take care of it. It only took a few days lol.

    Enjoy your new book.

  17. Beth, the admission that I'm about to make right in front of you, God and everyone else is going to convince everyone that I'm crazy...but oh well...it is what it is!!! I LOVE to buy those blank journals and have tons of them. The craxy part is that I am AFRAID to write in them. They are so cool and they just beg for me to take pen or pencil to them, but I just freeze! Oh my gosh, I just wrote this down and admitted it! I'm going to give some serious thought to the reasons behind this...(walks away muttering to self)

  18. I should start riding the bike at the gym, it really would be a great place to read and it's a really good workout too. I can read when I use the eliptical trainer but I can't when I run the treadmill so I end up on the eliptical alot. Linda
