Snip Snip

Cutting off your nose With the announcement on Friday that the 2016 Summer Olympics were not going to Chicago, it came as no surprise to me to see the level of happiness exhibited by those who delight in any perceived failing of our President. I felt it was inevitable, but even I was surprised at the level of schadenfreude and malicious glee we've seen. It certainly seems to me to be a case of cutting off your nose to spite your face. Here are a few choice tidbits.

From Glenn Beck's radio show (read the full transcript here):

STU: Ya, sure. The first round of voting is up for the Olympic games, and the first...

GLENN: Wait for it! Wait for it! Enjoy this. Savor this moment.

STU: And the first city to be eliminated is... Chicago. Yes, our president flew all the way over there to fail.

GLENN: Not one plane. Just in one plane?

STU: No. Two planes. We need more breaking news. There we go. Two planes.

GLENN: Two planes.

STU: His wife Oprah Winfrey, all the jet fuel needed to lift them.

GLENN: All the massive amounts of corruption that was promised.

STU: All the greenhouse gas emissions, all the publicity, all the excitement.

GLENN: For nothing.

STU: For as the kids call it, an epic fail.

[snip]

GLENN: Are you saying that the president failed?

STU: Glenn, there is no honest observer who could disagree with that statement.

GLENN: Let me ask you this, Stu: In his failure to bring the Olympic games, didn't Putin go over and get the Olympic games?

STU: Yes, he did, Glenn.

GLENN: Wasn't Tony Blair the first to go over and get the Olympic games?

STU: I believe you're correct on that, Glenn.

GLENN: So this would make the is it possible that this is the first head of state of any major country that has ever gone over and made the pitch in person and then failed?

STU: I don't know if that's true, but I'm choosing to believe it, Glenn.

GLENN: We can always hope.

STU: And Glenn, by the way, I don't know if you're noticing this. This is the first absolute undisputable [sic] proof of Rush's comment being true: I hope he fails because we're going to need the money. Well, he's failed and guaranteed we've saved money by his failure.

GLENN: Unbelievable.

STU: So it's actually, it's proven to be true.

GLENN: Do you notice there in Daley plaza they have a sign up on one of the buildings: Imagine.

STU: Imagine failure, Glenn.

GLENN: No, no. It says...

STU: You don't need to imagine it anymore. It's here.

GLENN: It says Chicago 2016, imagine. And that's exactly what they're going to have to do. In 2016 they'll stand around and imagine what it would have been like to have the Olympics in Chicago.

STU: Welcome to the 2016 imaginary games.

From Rush Limbaugh's radio show:

The worst day of Obama's presidency, folks. The ego has landed. The world has rejected Obama. For those of you who are upset that I sound gleeful, I am. I don't deny it. I'm happy. Anything that gets in the way of Barack Obama accomplishing his domestic agenda is fine with me.

From the conservative blog Red State's Erick Erickson:

Hahahahaha. So Obama's pimped us to every two bit thug and dictator in the world, made promises to half the Olympic committee, and they did not even kiss him. So much for improving America's standing in the world, Barry O.

From the Weekly Standard editor John McCormack in a post titled "Chicago Loses! Chicago Loses!":

Cheers erupt at Weekly Standard world headquarters. As a citizen of the world who believes that no one nation can or should try to dominate another nation, I'm glad that the Obama White House's jingoist rhetoric and attempt to pay back Chicago cronies at the expense of undermining our relationships with our allies failed.

"Jingoist?" This, after eight years of President Bush? Good grief. I'm surprised his tongue didn't leap out of his mouth and run screaming down the hall.

Here's an idea. For any of these folks who are loving the fact that Chicago didn't get the Olympics because they see it as a failure on President Obama's part, I recommend that you make a pilgrimage to Chicago. Stand on any street in the city and shout to all passersby that you are thrilled that Chicago didn't get the Olympics. Confront Chicagoans as they walk to work, or walk on their way to the unemployment office, or as they hit the streets trying to find a job because they've been out of work for months. Although the city was split on getting the Olympics, you can bet there were plenty who were hoping for the work the Games would bring to the city. Stand on the corner and assail those passing by and tell them how glad you are that they lost the Olympics, because you want so desperately to see President Obama--a guy who has lived in their city for several years now and calls it home--FAIL.

Go on. I'm sure they'd appreciate your thoughts and feelings, and would love to hear what you have to say about it.

I have to say that I am stunned by some of these comments from right wingers who hate Obama. If you didn't pick up on it, they are quite happy we failed in our bid to bring the Olympics here, simply because they feel it is a failure on Obama's part. They are happy that Chicago didn't win, and they are happy that our country didn't win. It is always a great honor to host the Games, and people around the world would have focused on our country and the great city of Chicago, and it would have been a great chance to continue to repair the damage that has been done to our international relationships and to our standing in the world.

These people were happy that our country failed.

Chicago Olympics2 It seems obvious to me that their hatred of Obama has overtaken their ability to think rationally and to think of things that would mean a lot to our country and to one of our greatest cities. When you cannot get beyond your own blind and irrational hatred, you have lost your capacity for reasonable discourse and logical thought.

If any of you support these people, or think that they make sense, I urge you to stop and take a look at what they have said about this, and ask yourself if they have the best interests of our country at heart. Take a look at the faces of Chicagoans who were so disappointed to see their bid rejected, and take time to wonder if people like Beck, Limbaugh, et al, had those people in mind when they made these remarks on their show or in their blogs. If you also found it amusing to see Chicago lose its bid, if you got a real kick out of it, if you got a good laugh....

Pay a visit to Chicago. Really. Feel free to tell everyone how you thought it was so funny that they didn't win their bid.

I just hope you have good health insurance.

  1. It is a sad state of affairs for the wingnuts to be so glad that Chicago and the USA did not get the bid. They are going after Obama and his less then 24 hour support, saying he is neglecting what is going on in our country. The Senate has not even passed a comprehensive bill on health care yet, so there is nothing for the President to do. There is no Environmental Bill from the Senate yet, so there is nothing for President Obama to do.

We have become polarized, and I am not sure how we can begin to unite. I thought that Obama's election would be the start, but it has been even more devisive than before. I am not sure what the solution is :o(

  2. I've never recalled such bitter disrespect for the presidency as I have as of late. It's sickening the hatred these people spew on a daily basis. I wish these people would wake up and see first hand how much they're undermining our country. We don't need our morality compromised in these tough economic times. We need to get back to values such as honor and respect for what this country is supposed to stand for.

I've gotten to the point I don't even turn the news on anymore and tune out the naysayers. Gloating over what they consider to be a fallacy in our president seems almost traitorous to me. (Hugs)Indigo

  4. It makes me sick, and I mean almost literally. When I read these asshole comments early this morning they left me nauseous and wanting to cry. I'm at the point of just turning off the news and hiding somewhere, and yet I know that those of us who still have a heart and a brain need to do something to stop the hateful bullshit. I just don't know what we can do. Fighting against irrationality isn't easy.

  5. I <3 Chicago. They say New Yorkers stand by eachother, blah blah blah but I think Chicago does more so. It's an awesome city that you could spend months in and still not see all the awesome. :D

  6. But what irks me most, is that if we'd gotten the Olympics they would have blamed him for that, too. All the money spent on building stadiums and such. Where's that money comin' from, Obama?
He literally, in the case of these rightwingnut asshats, cannot win no matter what he does.

  7. Great site you have here, Beth. An island of reason and logic in an ocean of silliness. Keep it up!

The right wing is positively giddy that the United States will not be hosting the Olympics. Seriously, has it dawned on you yet how utterly despicable these people are? I was just wonderin'.

The main goal of the GOP these days is to insure that President Obama's administration is a complete and utter failure. They want to see as many Americans as possible suffer in the next three years, thus, ensuring that they will be able to seize control of the executive branch in 2013. If the president succeeds in making life better for his countrymen and women, they fail. It's as simple as that. Mitch McConnell, to his credit, always looks quite uncomfortable when he is forced to justify policies as atrocious as those being put forward these days by that hideous party. But Cantor always has a serene, angelic smile on his face whenever he is forced to defend the morally indefensible - sort of like last week, at a Town Hall meeting when he told a woman whose mortally ill relative had been left bankrupt by her medical bills that she should rely on charity. He seemed so content with himself. Quite strange really.

  8. These people were happy that our country failed.

That statement said it all. No matter what they say, it really comes down to that they wanted our country to lose. Does anyone who follows them understand that?

Jingoist? This, after eight years of President Bush? Good grief. I'm surprised his tongue didn't leap out of his mouth and run screaming down the hall.

And I couldn't have agreed with you more.

  9. More needs to happen for the country to take back the airwaves and the media from this conservative assholes. The more they keep dominating the media the more malice and distraction they produce.

  10. Rather sad in many respects that your Olympic dream did not come true and Chicago was not awarded the 2016 Games. One city gets to be chosen and for the others it is "not this time, but please try again". There is no shame and humiliation in not being chosen, there is no sense of failure. Chicago made a good effort in submitting a bid and for that Americans should be thankful. I am horrified to read here that these right wing space cadets are blaming President Obama for Chicago's loss. Are they serious? What is going on down there? Where did this lynch mob mentality come from and why are these wingnuts able to be so vocal. I read Beth's entry and I read the comments that seem to come from intelligent, well adjusted, reasonably sane, compassionate, salt of the earth Americans. Then I wonder why we are not hearing more from people like you and why your voice is not the loudest. How did these right wingnuts get so much power and why are they able to talk the loudest. I would guess that there are far more normal, sane Americans than there are wackos like these ones down there. Why isn't their collective voice the loudest? Finally the US gets the opportunity on the world front to gain back a lot of the respect and trust that it lost in the Bush years only to be taken hostage by a bunch of rabid clowns turning it all into a three ring circus (apologies Bucko). Totally unbelievable.

  11. Seems to me that if an international organization is voting against the US, it is much more due to President Bush then President Obama. I happen to think that neither is true, that the vote was a referendum on South America never having the games, but to pile on the way some have about this being about Obama (and Daley) is ridiculous.

It's almost worth the defeat, knowing that these morons put more ridiculous statements out into the public realm.

How many times after the wars began did we hear anyone who expressed dissent as "hating America"? I guess it is OK to root against America as long as there is a Democrat in the White House, and someone is dumb enough to pay you twenty million dollars a year to spew bile over the airwaves.

I'm imagining a scenario where a Republican president goes to unsuccessfully present to the IOC: the calls for the US to drop out of the IOC, the calls to boycott future games, the vice-president authorizing the torturing of IOC voters to find out who they voted for...

  12. Hi Beth, great post! I was surprised by the amount of over zealous wind-bagging on this. Seems like a waste of their time. Nothing better to do? I guess. Bob's hit the nail on the head; no matter what happened they were prepared to attack and demonize Obama.

  13. Chicago rocks, and my heart aches for all of them. AND for us! WE failed. We all failed. AND those right wing fundie asshats should be ashamed of themselves.

    be well...
