With the announcement on Friday that the 2016 Summer Olympics were not going to Chicago, it came as no surprise to me to see the level of happiness exhibited by those who delight in any perceived failing of our President. I felt it was inevitable, but even I was surprised at the level of schadenfreude and malicious glee we've seen. It certainly seems to me to be a case of cutting off your nose to spite your face. Here are a few choice tidbits.

Stand on any street in the city and shout to all passersby that you are thrilled that Chicago didn't get the Olympics. Confront Chicagoans as they walk to work, or walk on their way to the unemployment office, or as they hit the streets trying to find a job because they've been out of work for months. Although the city was split on getting the Olympics, you can bet there were plenty who were hoping for the work the Games would bring to the city. Stand on the corner and assail those passing by and tell them how glad you are that they lost the Olympics, because you want so desperately to see President Obama--a guy who has lived in their city for several years now and calls it home--FAIL.
Go on. I'm sure they'd appreciate your thoughts and feelings, and would love to hear what you have to say about it.
I have to say that I am stunned by some of these comments from right wingers who hate Obama. If you didn't pick up on it, they are quite happy we failed in our bid to bring the Olympics here, simply because they feel it is a failure on Obama's part. They are happy that Chicago didn't win, and they are happy that our country didn't win. It is always a great honor to host the Games, and people around the world would have focused on our country and the great city of Chicago, and it would have been a great chance to continue to repair the damage that has been done to our international relationships and to our standing in the world.
These people were happy that our country failed.
It seems obvious to me that their hatred of Obama has overtaken their ability to think rationally and to think of things that would mean a lot to our country and to one of our greatest cities. When you cannot get beyond your own blind and irrational hatred, you have lost your capacity for reasonable discourse and logical thought.
If any of you support these people, or think that they make sense, I urge you to stop and take a look at what they have said about this, and ask yourself if they have the best interests of our country at heart. Take a look at the faces of Chicagoans who were so disappointed to see their bid rejected, and take time to wonder if people like Beck, Limbaugh, et al, had those people in mind when they made these remarks on their show or in their blogs. If you also found it amusing to see Chicago lose its bid, if you got a real kick out of it, if you got a good laugh....
Pay a visit to Chicago. Really. Feel free to tell everyone how you thought it was so funny that they didn't win their bid.
I just hope you have good health insurance.
It is a sad state of affairs for the wingnuts to be so glad that Chicago and the USA did not get the bid. They are going after Obama and his less then 24 hour support, saying he is neglecting what is going on in our country. The Senate has not even passed a comprehensive bill on health care yet, so there is nothing for the President to do. There is no Environmental Bill from the Senate yet, so there is nothing for President Obama to do.

I've never recalled such bitter disrespect for the presidency as I have as of late. It's sickening the hatred these people spew on a daily basis. I wish these people would wake up and see first hand how much they're undermining our country. We don't need our morality compromised in these tough economic times. We need to get back to values such as honor and respect for what this country is supposed to stand for.

It makes me sick, and I mean almost literally. When I read these asshole comments early this morning they left me nauseous and wanting to cry. I'm at the point of just turning off the news and hiding somewhere, and yet I know that those of us who still have a heart and a brain need to do something to stop the hateful bullshit. I just don't know what we can do. Fighting against irrationality isn't easy.

The main goal of the GOP these days is to insure that President Obama's administration is a complete and utter failure. They want to see as many Americans as possible suffer in the next three years, thus, ensuring that they will be able to seize control of the executive branch in 2013. If the president succeeds in making life better for his countrymen and women, they fail. It's as simple as that. Mitch McConnell, to his credit, always looks quite uncomfortable when he is forced to justify policies as atrocious as those being put forward these days by that hideous party. But Cantor always has a serene, angelic smile on his face whenever he is forced to defend the morally indefensible - sort of like last week, at a Town Hall meeting when he told a woman whose mortally ill relative had been left bankrupt by her medical bills that she should rely on charity. He seemed so content with himself. Quite strange really.

ReplyDeleteRather sad in many respects that your Olympic dream did not come true and Chicago was not awarded the 2016 Games. One city gets to be chosen and for the others it is "not this time, but please try again". There is no shame and humiliation in not being chosen, there is no sense of failure. Chicago made a good effort in submitting a bid and for that Americans should be thankful. I am horrified to read here that these right wing space cadets are blaming President Obama for Chicago's loss. Are they serious? What is going on down there? Where did this lynch mob mentality come from and why are these wingnuts able to be so vocal. I read Beth's entry and I read the comments that seem to come from intelligent, well adjusted, reasonably sane, compassionate, salt of the earth Americans. Then I wonder why we are not hearing more from people like you and why your voice is not the loudest. How did these right wingnuts get so much power and why are they able to talk the loudest. I would guess that there are far more normal,sane Americans than there are wackos like these ones down there. Why isn't their collective voice the loudest? Finally the US gets the opportunity on the world front to gain back a lot of the respect and trust that it lost in the Bush years only to be taken hostage by a bunch of rabid clowns turning it all into a three ring circus (apologies Bucko). I happen to think that neither is true, that the vote was a referendum on South America never having the games, but to pile on the way some have about this being about Obama (and Daley) is ridiculous.

How many times after the wars began did we hear anyone who expressed dissent as "hating America"? I guess it is OK to root against America as long as there is a Democrat in the White House, and someone is dumb enough to pay you twenty million dollars a year to spew bile over the airwaves.
I'm imagining a scenario where a Republican president goes to unsuccessfully present to the IOC: the calls for the US to drop out of the IOC, the calls to boycott future games, the vice-president authorizing the torturing of IOC voters to find out who they voted for...
