Veteran's Day and a new book

I may not be thrilled with the wars we're involved in right now, or with war in general, but that doesn't mean that I don't honor and value each and every person who has served, or is serving. Today I thank them all for their service, and for those serving now, I hope they will be home with their loved ones soon. I have a very special place in my heart for several veterans, including my cousin Greg (a Marine in the first Gulf War), my brother-in-law Tom (a Marine in Vietnam), and of course, my Dad (Army in WWII). My nephew Steve is currently in the Marines, and has not been deployed. I don't think it's selfish of any of us to want the situation to stay that way, but we'll deal if and when we need to.

I ran some errands this morning and of course, spent more at Target than I'd intended. One of the things I've been looking for was a shallow glass bowl to put my bamboo in. It's actually getting several leaves, and I haven't killed it yet, so I wanted to get a bigger bowl for it. I found one today...but it's a little bigger than I wanted, so now I'll have this lone bamboo stick plopped in the middle of a wide expanse of emptiness. Does anyone know if they send up shoots elsewhere in the container, or would I have to buy a couple more to stick in there?

Big excitement at Target...the new Stephen King book is out! And there was much rejoicing at Nutwood! It's a collection of short stories called Just After Sunset. Ooooo, scary! This picture doesn't do it justice, but the cover has a way cool prismatic effect. Ooooo, freaky! I'm looking forward to reading a story called "The Cat From Hell." I didn't know Big Steve knew Sheeba! (Totally kidding...as Sheeba likes to hear us say, he's the best kitty in the whole universe. He's sacked out on my lap as I type.)

Then it was a quick trip to the grocery store, then after I put stuff away, it was a little time on the elliptical and a little bit of handweights for my arms. Nothing major, but I'm easing my way into it, trying to work up to a little more each day. Feels pretty good so far...I'm liking the elliptical, especially when I get a nice rhythm going. I don't know where the day has flown to, but I have yet to read any blogs, and I still have another entry bubbling away in the cauldron of my mind. I don't have to make dinner tonight, though, since Ken has a dinner meeting, so that will give me some extra time.

More later, and I'll catch up with you all, don't worry!

  7. How did you get that funny question below the Post Comment line? I am a Stephen King fan. Fron the time I spent my allowance on a little known paperback book called Carrie back when I was in grade school, and my Dad read it, then my brother, then my sister and the family just adored anything S.K. I really enjoyed your tribute. I'm sorry I haven't been by your journal for awhile but we've all been down with the crud sickness. I have never ever been to Target that I didn't end up spending more than I meant to but I'm so glad you found the bowl. I can identify with that VICTORIOUS feeling of finding what you're looking for. Just a hello to all in Nutwood from everyone in our household.

  13. I still haven't read Duma Key yet...I have it, just haven't gotten around to it. And now he has a new one out, that is a first. Usually I'm waiting forever for the next one to arrive on the bookshelves. I hadn't heard about this one even.

Wonderful post for today. I've had several uncles serve, one died in Vietnam. My SIL is currently in Mississippi, he is set to deploy after the holidays. There is news on Skye...I'll email you. (Hugs)Indigo

  14. I haven't read any Stephen King in awhile, I may have to add him to my winter reading list.
Some bamboos will run under the soil, if they're the type that spread by rhizome. Whichever kind it is, the big bowl will do well, they like lots of root room and can become rootbound otherwise.
Ease into those workout routines or you'll be sore!

  15. I got a $50 Border's gift card as a tip, and I'm thinking of picking up this book. I've heard the 9/11 story is quite impactful, and the book earned a very good review in the local paper.

  17. I met Stephen King once, he's just as strange as his books. Also, I was doing a musical one summer and the conductor knew the score from memory so instead of having it on the music stand in front of him he had King novel. Whenever the orchestra wasn't playing he was reading the novel.

  18. I quit reading Stephen King years ago. I really enjoyed his books from the 70's, but have moved on. Still.. he can do some scary stuff. :)

  19. My family has served in every was or conflict since the Revolutionary war with George Washington. Every one since, and I may not agree with War, but honor and respect all Military people! So, lets remember them every day.

  20. I will have to get that book. I am a fan of his work. Even though, sometimes it scares me to death late at night when I am the only one awake and it is one of his scary ones.
He is a wonderful writer. Thanks for the tip.
