I couldn’t do it

Screaming woman Were you all thinking I was going to be writing tonight about Palin's appearance on Okra's show?

I kind of thought I would be, too, and my initial plan was to watch it. This morning, I watched a few clips on Oprah's (okay, I'll stop calling her Okra) website, and as I wrote to a friend, I realized that I just couldn't stomach the thought of having her face up on the big screen TV. I'll eventually watch it online, and the smaller screen should mitigate the sense of visceral loathing that I'm bound to experience. I hope I didn't disappoint you all, but never fear, there will be more to come!

Watching those clips was bad enough, and reading a couple of things about it fired me up enough. Seeing the entire interview will probably give me a thrombo, but as Cousin Shane said the other day, "Know your enemy!"

A couple of things that really stuck out for me...I think I saw this on Politics Daily.

On her resignation as governor: "Even after finishing the book, I still don't understand why you stepped down," Winfrey asked late in the hour-long interview. Palin reiterated her previous line about the political dynamic having changed so much when she returned that her presence was a hindrance to state business. "And I couldn't be out there talking about issues that matter to people," she added.

Palin and crab What the fuck does that even mean? This is utter bullshit. She wasn't thinking about political dynamics or what was best for Alaska. She couldn't stand the heat of media scrutiny and she wanted to cash in with a ghost-written book. (Again, I don't really blame anyone for cashing in, but at least be honest about it rather than spouting nonsense about how you did something for the greater good.) Out there talking about issues that matter to people? Oh, like that idiocy you recently spoke about concerning "In God we trust" on our coins? Important issues like that, Sarah?

On Katie Couric: Palin said she refused to answer Couric's question about what newspapers she read because she was "annoyed," and felt that Couric was speaking as if Alaska was a "foreign country" where people were detached from the rest of the world. "It was unprofessional of me to wear my annoyance on my sleeve like that," Palin said, and admitted that she later wished she had just named a newspaper. She added that some of the segments with Couric, whom she referred to as "the perky one," were filmed right after invigorating rallies, before she had had even a moment to collect her thoughts.

I find this hilarious. Couric asked a simple question:

COURIC: And when it comes to establishing your world view, I was curious, what newspapers and magazines did you regularly read before you were tapped for this — to stay informed and to understand the world?

PALIN: I’ve read most of them again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media —

COURIC: But what ones specifically? I’m curious.

PALIN: Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years.

COURIC: Can you name any of them?

PALIN: I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news.

Palin's office5 How is that annoying? How is that suggesting that people in Alaska are uninformed? Seems to me that it was a specific question directed towards Palin herself, asking what she reads to stay informed. If any of you asked me that, I wouldn't be annoyed, and I wouldn't look like a deer caught in the headlights. I'd say that I read our local weekend paper and the daily online edition, Time magazine, news aggregates like Politics Daily, Huffington Post, Wired Science, and the NPR blog, various other news stories posted by friends...it's not a difficult question, and I find it interesting that Palin feels the need to lash out at Couric for doing her job and for asking such an uncomplicated question.

And calling her "the perky one?" That strikes me as more than a little catty.

I can be perky, too. That doesn't mean that I don't bite. Watch out for us perky ones. We can be sneaky like Ninja.

  2. I can't stand to look at her, never mind listen to her idiotic babble. I'd rather listen to a leaky faucet. At least, in that case, there's a reason for the annoying sound.

  3. The bonus of Palin's head on a big screen is that it would then give her a regular sized brain.

If that screen were, say, an Imax, for example.

For what it's worth, I do consider Katie's to be perky.

  6. I missed it but watched part of it on Okra's website. Palin is all about how unfair the press and others were to her, like she's the only one. I want her to go away.

  11. I think Palin incites revulsion more than any kind of apathy. I can't stomache the woman myself.

Honestly I wish people would stop giving her the time of day, press and attention. Maybe then she would fade away and crawl back into the whatever hole she scuttled out of.

Every time I see her with that bear skin and trophy testament of her hunting, I want to personally hunt her down myself. (Hugs)Indigo

  12. Last night, I was having a discussion to why I think that Sarah Stil- er, Palin (you know, I NEVER get tired of that!!) worries me.

First, if she runs she can win. The recent race for the 23rd District in New York was proof enough for me. The Democrats have to find their way again, in front of everyone. Meanwhile a large part of the population readily identifies with her as someone who worked hard and scuffled her way up to the big stage. Now that she is there, she is getting picked on unfairly.

She doesn't have to win the majority of votes in the primary races, just get the most among all the other canidates. I think the mood of the country is one where if the Obama race motivated the young and urban folks to go vote, then Palin will be able to pull from the Wal Mart Mom's and Scooter and the boys to go vote.

So once she gains the Republican Party nomination, it is a 50/50 race. She appeals to the far right factions as well as some moderates. If Jimmy Car-, er Barack Obama continues to flounder along with the directionless Democratic Party, then it isn't that far fetched to see her in a competitive race.

Does she has her flaws? I think I have more political acumen and general knowledge than she does. But I don't appeal to a broad segment of America. And I don't have access to sounding board where I can reach people and get them to vote for me.

There are people who 'hope' that she goes away. That isn't how it is going to happen. Someone is going to have to face her and take her down. Knowing that she is incapable of leadership is not the same as showing it and providing a subsititute.

Otherwise, if there is no reason NOT to vote for her, I think she stands a credible shot at finding a spot on the GOP ticket.

  13. She was the straw that turned me into a DEMOCRAT! And that didn;t break my back!
I was always a very liberal Republican, now I am just honest...

  14. I figured she(Palin) would play the victim card to Oprah. On that show, that yields a big payoff. It isn't like Oprah would actually call her on anything. As much as I like Oprah as a person, I have never been able to handle her soft approach with her guests.

  15. Hi Beth,
There was an interesting review of Palin's book in today's LA Times which basically suggested that Palin is a sincere phony, which isn't as insulting as it sounds. In other words, she might actually believe what she says (as hard as that is to imagine).
    Best,
    Marty

  18. I caught the very end of the show by accident and yelled out a few ugly names when I saw the dumb bitch sitting there with her whiney high pitched voice and that STUPID DEER IN THE HEADLIGHTS expression!!! She always looks as though she is terrified at what she is going to be asked...well I guess based on her history I would be too.

Pig Oprah fawned all over her from what I saw. I loathe the big O but I didn't think she would be so gushey with her mortal enemy. Can we spell S.E.L.L.O.U.T?
