It's official....

Daniel Craig is my favorite Bond of all time, surpassing Sean Connery.

When "Casino Royale" came out, I think most of us Bond fans were blown away with Craig's portrayal of him. But in order to be fair to Mr. Connery, I decided to hold back on such a big switch until I saw the second movie with Craig. We saw it late this afternoon, and I now feel that it is time to give the Number 1 spot to Daniel Craig. This takes nothing away from Mr. Connery, and I'll always have a special place in my heart for his suave Bond, especially because those were some of the finer Bond films in franchise history. And the sixties decor and clothing were pretty cool, too.

However, I love it that they've taken Bond in a different direction with Craig...they've reminded us that James Bond does indeed have a license to kill. His air of menace and cold blue eyes never let us forget that he would have no qualms whatsoever about snapping someone's neck with his bare hands.

"Quantum of Solace" isn't groundbreaking, but who goes to James Bond movies to see groundbreaking? It's a typical Bond movie with lots of great action sequences and a creepy villain that you can't wait to see get smacked around by James. A couple of beautiful women who are charmed by James, and plenty of political intrigue. James is still trying to come to terms with the loss of his love in "Casino Royale," Vespa, and what he believes was her betrayal of him. Will his desire for vengeance mean the end of his MI6 career, and his good relationship with M? Who can he trust? Can he even trust his own government?

Good stuff, but as always, the chase sequences and fights are what makes this movie a hell of a lot of fun. The movie opens with a bang as we watch a high speed car chase in the mountains of Italy. There's also a chase on foot through various homes and churches in Italy, and a plane chase. James gets to beat the crap out of several bad guys. My favorite, though, is the final fight with the creepy villain. I'll say no more.

If you like James Bond, you'll love this movie. If you don't...what's wrong with you?! Totally kidding--Bond isn't for everyone. If you're not a fan, this movie won't change your mind. If you are a fan, go see it in the theater. It's a blast. Literally.

I haven't forgotten to tell you about our evening at Studebaker last night. I'll work on the pictures tomorrow and make a slideshow for you (if I can remember how to do it). Suffice it to say, for now, that I think it was a hit! Ken is working on a slideshow for his blog, so you can see pictures of the event there. My pictures are mostly of the cars.

  2. Here I am, trying to catch up with everyone. I'm not a big Bond fan but, boy am I a Titan fan. Can you believe it? The Jets will be a good test next week. We sucked the first half today, but we pulled it out in the second.

  3. I am so with you on this; I just saw "Quantum of Solace" this afternoon. Up until Daniel Craig, Connery was the best Bond, hands down, in my book. I still adore Connery's Bond but I love Craig's edgier, more dangerous characterization. I first drooled over Craig in a film called, "The Mother." It's not an action movie, it's a character study of this 60 something woman who after the death of her husband decides that she has never really lied, so she invites Daniel Craig's character to take her "upstairs." It's a wonderful film, Craig is so gorgeous and the story has a lot of unexpected turns.

  4. I loved the old classic Bond movies, but haven't seen any in the last several years. I may have to remedy that.
Looking forward to seeing pics of the Studebakers!

  5. Hi Beth,
Thanks ... I think I'll check this movie out. The reviews have been ... err ... so-so, but nobody blames Daniel Craig for that. As for slide shows, they're a real pain in Blogger. I usually go to Picassa, create a "movie" out of the pictures I want to use and then save it on my drive as a slide show. Takes a while to upload, though, and doesn't always work ...
    Best,
    Marty

  11. I'm not a big Bond fan but if asked I'd have to say Sean Connery was pretty unbeatable. I haven't seen Daniel Craig in action yet so I can't compare. I'll have to wait till it comes on the TV for that.
I think Bond must surely have lost a lot of followers when Roger Moore took on the role. More hammy than a pigs belly methinks. ;O)

  12. OMG, Daniel Craig is my favorite Bond now too!!!! 'Quantum' was amazing and the next one is due out in 2010, I can't wait!!!! Connery was an amazing Bond for the first one, but daniel Craig has blown away the competition.. I thought that I may have an issue with Bond being blonde, after all, none of the others were, but nope. It totally works for me. Daniel Craig portrays Bond almost like it was written. Yes we have the books too as well as every Bond movie aside from 'Quantum' and I will remedy that when it comes out of course!

  13. I've always had a thing for Daniel Craig he was in a fantastic TV series here about 10 years ago, but I've yet to see any of his James Bond films, so i'll hold judgement, however I'm a massive fan of Sean Connery as he was the original.

  15. Went with SD and she like Danny-boy as well. I enjoy his Bond as well. Aura of menance ... I walk with that in my hip pocket, cause you never know! He certainly cuts one. He is ruggedly handsome, leaner and decidedly meaner.

The pace of the movie ... WOW! I thought I was going to have to step out, my heart was racing so! A good stong 4 1/2 stars ..!

  16. I can't comment until I see it, but Daniel Craig is certainly a good-looking hunk of man.

  17. I loved the commercials for it, so I'm sure I'll like the movie. I resisted liking Craig as bond because he's BLONDE!!!, but I had to admit, he was great in Casino Royale. But I still have a soft spot for Pierce, Sir Roger, and "SCHAHHNN CAHNN'RY".
